KLP WIND TRAINING

The staff and Board of Kilkenny LEADER Partnership (KLP) have long since identified the renewable energy sector as an area for growth and a key driver for the development of rural economies. Renewable Energy was a key area identified in the Kilkenny LEADER Rural Development Plan 2007-2013. In 2012, KLP ran training programmes to upskill people in the delivery of wind energy.

KLP identified the following courses as the key elements in preparing individuals to take up employment in the wind industry. The training provided aimed to meet the requirements of the Global Wind Organisation (GWO). Training was provided in the following areas:

• Working and Rescue at Heights

• Mobile Elevated Work Platform (accredited by International  Powered Access Federation IPAF)

• Introduction to the Wind Industry

• Manual Handling and Fire Safety training (in line with GWO requirements)

• First Aid (in line with GWO Standards)

DEVELOPMENT

KLP staff identified potential participants for a training programme through their Local and Community Development and Tus Programmes. It then applied to LEADER RDP and was granted funding.

FEEDBACK

Some of the participants said their confidence increased and they developed an interest in working further in the wind industry. Others said the engineering part of the training opened doors for the type of work they wanted to pursue.

RESULTS

The participants finished the programme trained to an industry standard and received certification from the Global Wind Organisation (GWO). Eight out of the twenty-five participants subsequently gained employment.
